Last evening, www.ZambianMusic.Net accidentally bumped into song bird Kantu (also written as Kan2) at one of the swimming pools around Lusaka. She was having a girls' day out with her female friends. She seemed worried about usbecause she wasn't expecting to meet anyone since it was her day off. Lucky enough, she opened up to about her personal life, music career and future plans.
In her own words, this is what she narrated to Paula Chisenga. My full real names are Kantu Siachingili. I was born on the 5th of April,1990. Iam the 5th born in a family of 6,- 2 males and 4 females. I was raised by both my parents. I did my primary school at Adastra Primary School in Choma and my secondary education at Hillcrest National Technical high in Livingstone. I then went on to to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Art with Education, Geography major and history minor at the University of Zambia in 2009 and graduated in 2013. In 2014, I enrolled at the same university to do a Master of Science in environmental and natural resource management which am currently still doing. I am in my second year. In my free time, I love to go out for movies and also reading story books.
My inspiration to do music comes from my young sister and elder brothers who believed in me even when I never believed in myself. I was inspired by my Mother and Father to become the artist iam today, principled, educated and still adhering to the values inculcated in me by my parents. Iam blessed to have such a supportive family. On the other hand, I am inspired by the American Singer 'Brandy'. I dream of meeting her someday.
I have always been a fan of music and loved to sing. Growing up in strict home, school was always the most important thing. I however saw an opportunity to do music when I moved to Lusaka to purse my first degree. I entered into a competition in 2010 called 'in tha hood' and I went on to win that competition. The prize was a record deal plus 2 music videos but unfortunately, the deal did not materialise. In 2012, I entered another competition called Talent Yapa Zed. I made it to the top 10 but I did not win and I remember being extremely devastated about the loss. Anyway, other doors were opened. In 2013, I worked on a project for the Zambia National Arts Council called 'past to present'. It was collaboration with my good friend Tasila Mwale. The album went on to win Best traditional Album in 2015 the Zambian Music Awards.
Kantu (Kan2) further told www.ZambianMusic.Net that, in December of 2013, I signed on to the label XYZ Entertainment and begun to do music professionally in January 2014. I released my very first single titled "Mungeli" in February 2014 which recieved massive airplay and topped most of Zambian radio charts and introduced Kan2 as a solo artist to Zambia. In the same year, I released my hit singles; Alangizi, Koneki and Undecided which all topped the charts and made the Kan2 brand stronger. 2015 was a good year for my music career. I got nominated at the Zambian music Awards in two categories, Best Upcoming Artist and Best Collaboration. That prompted me work extra hard and showed me that people believed in me. I later released my hit singles titled 'million' featuring T-sean and 'Lonely' produced by KB. I was also nominated at the Born n Bred awards the same year in the best upcoming female category.
I have worked with alot of artists. Iam the voice behind slapdee's hit singles 'remember, kalibu, just like that' and many other songs. I actually featured on all the songs except for a few in his album titled 'the Business' released in 2013. Since my break through, I have been blessed and worked with some of Zambia's finest musicians including Slapdee, Bobby East, T-sean, Yellowman, Koby, BMak, Stevo, Brisky and many more just to mention but a few. I beleive from now, Zambia and the rest of the world will embrace and appreciate my music since I am multi-talented.
