Zambian Musician Ruff Kid, Top Zambian Rapper

Give a round of applause for this week’s Game Changer. Masautso Nkhoma, who’s commonly known as Ruff Kid, is one of Zambia’s hottest Hip-Hop and Rap artistes. Since the age of 13, the artiste has risen to fame because of his dynamic lyrics, energetic performances and his controversial album titles. Let’s learn more about this game Changer, shall we?

Q: You say the name Ruff Kid depicts your background. How so?

A: It shows my background because I grew up in the village. I lived there up to my seventh grade. The experience was crazy, but like it was also interesting. I spent all the seasons without a pair of shoes. Come winter, come sunshine, come rainy days, I’d go to school barefooted. I was a real villager for some years. So yeah, it was rough when I was a kid.

Q: Who was Masautso before Ruff Kid debuted?

A: I was someone people despised, someone they underrated, and someone who wasn’t considered so yeah… That was Masautso [sigh].

Q: What were your school days like? What were you like as a pupil?

A: I was a very disciplined pupil [laugh]. But if you asked my classmates, they’d say I was jumpy. I was known as the guy who liked Drama (acting and performances). I was a show runner.

When I came to Lusaka, I started rapping. When I was in grade eight, aged 13-years-old, I was already famous. I was a pupil and an entertainer at the same time. I used to chill with Mainza a lot, so my music career was distracting me from school. Despite that I managed to finish secondary school, but I would have scored better results if my school was not disturbed.

Q: How did your community influence your career?

A: I grew up in different areas: I grew up in rural areas, and then when I left the village I came to Northmead so I was in the urban area. This is why my music is a mixture of events.

Q: You had a lot of controversy surrounding your brand. Ati shani?

A: It’s because I speak my mind and I speak the truth. You know the truth is always controversial. I think that’s why people see the controversy in me, but I just speak it the way it is.

Q: What achievement are you most proud of?

A: I’m proud of the Barefoot award. When I received it, D’banj had just been signed by Kanye and Zahara was one of the vocalists that up to now, very few people can compete with. I competed with those people and won despite their huge fan-base. To me that’s a lot; I’ll remember that forever man! It always boosts me and shows me that one day, I’m gonna be on top.

Q: You changed the game when you changed your name to Ruff Kaida. Why the switch?

A: I changed my name to Ruff Kaida because I was rebranding and transforming myself. But I’ve gone back to Ruff Kid because the other time, I was in the United States of America and the immigration told me to change my name. So I’m back to Ruff Kid. And Ruff Kid sounds nice also.

Q: You’re very transparent. What motivates your earnest character?

A: I’m real; I don’t fake it. I’m authentic man, and you can’t fake authenticity so yeah! I’m just me. I am the only Zambian hip-hop artiste who has changed the game with a unique flow, transparency and hyper character.
